Happy Valentine's Day all you lovely Bookworms!
I thought I would take the opportunity today to share with you all one of my favourite romantic sonnets, it is written by the amazing Elizabeth Barrett Browning and it really plucks on my heartstring. I studied poetry through my A Levels and university so I had the pleasure of learning of different poets from around the world and throughout time which for me was amazing as I have always had a heart for poetry.
So without further ado here is Sonnet 43 by Elizabeth Barrett Browning...
'How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of being and ideal grace.
I love thee to the level of every day's
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.
I love thee freely, as men strive for right.
I love thee purely, as they turn from praise.
I love thee with the passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints. I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life; and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.'
I adore this poem and love how she measures her love to everyday simple mundane things that we see on a daily. The repetition of "I love thee" just makes this poem all the more personal and special which I think makes this one of the most romantic poems I have read.
