⭐⭐⭐
Book one: The Duke & I
Author: Julia Quinn
Publication Date: 5th January 2000
Publisher: Little, Brown Book Group
Straight away from the first page we are plunged into the world of the London ton, where the most concerning things are ball gowns, getting married, becoming the diamond of the first water and oh yes, the one and only notorious Lady Whistledown.
Set in the same world as our famous Jane Austen, we see London but with a modern-ish twist. We see from the start of the book that Daphne is a catch for the Lords, Dukes and Princes of the year 1813. Head strong Daphne is out in the world on the search for a husband. Simon the desirable Duke of Hastings is wanting anything but marriage, wife and a heir, at first we see him as a arrogant gentleman with not a care in the world.
From the point where there are wedding bells onwards you could say that this storyline becomes slightly frustrating which is why this book has only received three stars from myself personally. This is also the book where I find Daphne's siblings intolerable and nosey, especially the Viscount Bridgerton. Personally, if the storyline was slightly different and some of the characters were treated better then written I might have given this a bit more then three stars, but that's just me.
Trigger Warning: Ableism, Rape, Parental Abandonment, Child Abuse & Neglect, Alcohol Consumption, Miscarriage & Still-Birth and Death of Spouse.
Happy Reading!
