Without my mum reading to me as I grew up, my Grandads book genre influence and these three books (As well as a couple of others) I wouldn't be where I am today! This has to be the best trilogy that I have read and it all starts with twin sisters Lia and Alice Milthorpe and a funeral...their fathers.
From that first page in the pouring rain you are gripped by the books talons, you delve deeper into the late 1800's (a time period I adore and have been told I belong in, I am quiet old fashioned). From the funeral we are taken to their manor house, a dark and gloomy place where they reside with their little brother Henry and Aunt Virginia. Without spoiling it too much you will find reading this that Henry and Aunt Virginia play two very crucial parts in this trilogy and the first book won't be the only time that you see them. This has all of the twists and turns you could want in a YA fantasy series. Michelle Zink writes in such a beautiful way that you can't help but feel as if you yourself are a part of her story, flying, soaring and dodging all the things lurking in the shadows. There will be characters that you love at the start but then at the end hate and those that you will feel cautious about but later adore. You just can't help but change how you see certain characters throughout these books, your thoughts and feelings will change as fast as Lia and Alice grow into who they are meant to be.
Now I am a careful reader; I don't break spines, I don't dog-ear my pages (I lost it when I lent my brother my
Harry Potter books and he broke all the spines, he did keep them and I did buy myself new ones). But these books have the slightest creases on the spines which just shows how much they have been read since they were published. Not only do I love them but my lovely Nanna does too, after I read them she borrowed my copies and fell in love with them as much as me. You can't help but love the story that Michelle has written, it is dark, it it light, it is full of adventure, romance, betrayal, deception, satanic rituals and prophecy or two. Whilst reading it you will sit there engaged, eyes scanning the words on the page and BAM plot twist and you will need a moment to compose yourself and possibly (if you are like me) re-read what it is you have just discovered to make sure you have read it correctly. Would I love to see this trilogy into a movie or tv series? Hell yeah!! Do I need to know more after Circle of Fire ends? Defiantly, I feel like with these books Michelle (if she wanted too) could go on and on with the story and I would be there with those books in my hands reading them over and over again. If you like Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials or Jennifer Armentrout's From Blood and Ash you will love this trilogy.
So would you give it a go? Would you delve into the 1890's and follow Lia and Alice on their journey to the truth? I would again and again and again, because every time you read it it is just like the first.
Trigger Warnings: Violence, Satanic Rituals, Death of Parents/Guardians and Siblings, Graphic Injuries, Demonic Activity, Madness. Happy Reading!
