Book: Nutcracker of Crystalfall

Author: Kay L. Moody

Book 10 Of The Year

Love, love, love!! By far my favourite novella out of the ones I have read. An easy read that can be read in one sitting. Kay writes beautifully, the descriptions, the worldbuilding, characters and their development as the tale goes on just makes me adore this book more and more.

I adore The Nutcracker fairy-tale, I have since I was a child and I adore the ballet which I have had the pleasure of working so many times when it has visited the theatre I work at. So you can guarantee when there is a book that is a gorgeous twist on the classic tale I will be there front and centre.

If you are a fan of M.A Kuzniar's Midnight in Everwood this is the book for you!

Sticking with traditional folklore we have threads of it woven throughout this book which adds more to the story and to the characters that we meet. We have mythical creatures, pixies, trolls, fae, doors between worlds, different and far away lands, Kings and Queens and so much more crammed into a 202 paged book. I loved how out protagonist Clara can't read, write and fights/gets herself and our leading male Ravyn out of sticky situations throughout the novel as it goes against all of the traditional female stereotype of women being damsels in distress during the Victorian era.

Two things I weren't quite keen on was:

1. I felt like the book was a little rushed especially the ending, I felt like it could have been drawn out further but then it wouldn't be the size that it is.

2. We all have a love hate relationship with it...a cliff-hanger. Now I love them but when I knew there's going to be a sequel but with this book it is a standalone! So there will be no sequel, for me the story is only just beginning and there are so many routes that Kay could go down with Clara and Revyn, so many possible journeys they could go on. I mean does the villain win, do the hero's come up triumphant and do we get a King or Queen of Crystalfall? I guess we'll never know, I'll have to stick to my imagination and come up with some storylines myself.

But all in all I loved this novella it was fun, sweet, rebellious and everything you could image when you hear the word Fae.

Trigger Warnings: Forced Marriage, Mental Abuse, Violence, Fighting, Magic, Blood, Gore, Alcohol and Death

Happy Reading!
