Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Book: Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries

Author: Heather Fawcett

Publication Date: 10th January 2023

Book 9 Of The Year

What can I say other than I adore this book and can not wait for a sequel! It is exciting, it's sarcastic, full of whimsical fantasy and slow-burn romance.

Our protagonist an Victorian female scholar (yes you heard me right) Emily, unmarried, sharing a cottage with an unmarried man and adventuring around the world alone, she is everything a traditional Victorian female isn't. As I read the book I saw so much of myself in Emily, from the idea of being comfortable alone and unmarried in her twenties right down to the messy hair bun always falling down whilst I'm working (it is a pain, especially with hair my length) and I love it! I love how against stereotypes it is and how much of an uproar it would have caused during the era it is set, don't get me wrong I adore the Victorian era but there is something so inviting about being rebellious. This all adds to the book and makes it so much more fun book with characters that make you smile.

The details, the worldbuilding it is all phenomenal and we all know that I love imagery and worldbuilding... You feel as though you are there alongside Emily, Shadow and Wendell taking part in the adventure, the magic and all of the cold weather. One major thing I loved about this book was the fact that it was written as if it was a journal that both Emily and Wendell have the opportunity to 'write in' and narrate their side of the story in their own narrative. For me it felt a lot more personal and laidback almost like it added more to the story and who these people are in the novel.

I have always loved folklore, mythology and legends so to find little snippets of folklore through this novel makes it even more special and tie in more with the idea of it being a tale about faeries. It's not often I read a book and are blown away by all of the added details, the little bits that people normally don't read but with this it was completely different.

I really did struggle to put this book down, it hooked me from the first page to the last where we find out that it is going to be a sequel! I will tell you know I have never gone so fast onto Waterstone's website to pre-order a book then I did to order the sequel. I would highly recommend this book, for me I find that this book is appropriate for all ages from young teen straight to 100 years of age. Also to finish I would happily accept a Shadow from anyone for my birthday (16th March for those wondering), please and thank you because that dog is gorgeous!!!

It's a 10/10 for me!!

Trigger Warning: Blood, Violence, Murder and Gore.

Happy Reading!
