Dobby, the beloved house elf that died in the arms of his best friend Harry Potter on the most beautiful beach. Did you know you can go and visit this said beach? No, well let me tell you.
Lets get down to business, so that iconic scene is filmed on a beautiful beach in Pembrokeshire, South Wales and that beach is called Freshwater West. It is free and accessible for all members of the public, the trickiest bit is the sand dunes but follow along and they won't cause you too much trouble.
How do you find it I hear you ask? Well, it is simpler then what myself and my parents thought. First you need to head to Freshwater West and carry on driving the coastal road until you come to some really small war memorials (See picture above right). Next to these memorials is a free carpark, the catch you can't park there overnight, I believe if you do (and you're caught) you could end up with a fine!
Cross over the road and you will come to a slop, walk down the concrete slop and walk across the beach to the right. Continue going until you reach the lifeguard hut. Keep on walking forward (right of the lifeguard hut) and you will be able to see a mass of stones and a cross, ta-da! You've found it! The hardest part is the climb up the sand dune, it is quite steep but once you have done it the view is beautiful (and you also get to see all of the socks, painted stones and gifts left for our fallen free elf). We made it to the spot just as the sun was setting into the sea and it painted the sky in the most beautiful colours making this experience even more magical. Little pre-warning which I personally think is important is that there was a lot of pieces of plastic along this beach so please mind your feet when walking up and down the beach and the sand dunes. It was quite chilly as well, we remembered to take a jumper with us as the wind was whipping up and down the beach. But other then that it was one of the best experiences and even better it was free!
Fun Fact! The beach is in Pembrokeshire but the Shell House that is on the beach is actually in Cornwall! Crazy right or is it just magic? An easier way to find the beach (and the spot, you don't want to go the wrong way and have to climb through the sand dunes and over tons of rocks) are to use these co-ordinates: 51°39'28.8"N 5°03'36.0"W.
Enjoy and happy adventuring!
